Oval sapphire

Discover why the oval sapphire has become a must-have in jewelry, the good reasons to make this choice, and some criteria to find the ideal stone.

Oval sapphire: a classic and widely used shape

The oval sapphire is the most popular stone shape in jewelry and fine jewelry. This is especially true for the blue sapphire, which is also cut in round, square, cushion, or pear shapes. Sapphires of other colors are also often oval-shaped, but you may see more creativity with some, such as the violet sapphire.

The appearance of the oval sapphire varies depending on the cut performed. That’s why you find oval sapphires with different numbers of facets. The brilliant cut is sought after, as it enhances the stone with maximum sparkle. The cabochon cut is another example: a stone without facets and a domed upper part.We are therefore not seeking brilliance. But the majority of oval sapphires do have facets.

A gemstone can be of varying quality, as can its cut or shape. Many stones are oval-shaped or cut, a style that became popular during the 20th century.

Why choose an oval sapphire for a ring?

We have seen that the oval sapphire is generally faceted, for a beautiful sparkle. In addition, oval stones appear larger than other stones of the same weight. While the oval shape is appreciated for sapphires and other gems, including diamond, it is also because it suits a variety of jewelry styles. For a sapphire engagement ring, you can have an impressive stone at a lower cost and choose either a modern or vintage style.

Note that there are different oval shapes of sapphire, as the stones can be more or less elongated, depending on the length-to-width ratio. An oval sapphire and diamond cluster ring usually has a moderately oval shape, rather than an elongated one, but with custom ring creation, it depends on personal taste.

Ring styles with an oval sapphire

In addition to the oval cabochon sapphire ring, which features a polished surface, the rings have a brilliant appearance, often enhanced by the presence of diamonds. However, this is not mandatory. It is possible to create very beautiful oval sapphire solitaire rings without diamonds, especially if you like contemporary styles. Also, an oval sapphire can be paired with small round sapphires on an engagement ring or with two other oval sapphires for a trilogy ring. One of the most dazzling is the halo ring, with several small diamonds surrounding the sapphire.

With or without diamonds, a sapphire is perfect on all types of gold:

  • a white gold ring with an oval sapphire: modern, elegant, and radiant
  • a yellow gold ring: warm and timeless
  • a rose gold ring: soft, more romantic, and rather contemporary
