Learn moreA multi-colored sapphire is a real sapphire from the corundum family, which has several shades, which can be close or contrasting. The most widespread variety is saphir bicolore. Some, rarer, present 3 colors. Color areas can be distinctly separated or gradually blend into each other, with transition colors. It is not impossible to find ones with more than 3 colors, depending on the formation of the stone.
They can come from all kinds of countries where sapphire mines are located, such as Sri Lanka and Madagascar. Australia, the United States and Kenya are relatively important sources of multicolored sapphires.
Other varieties of sapphire have several colors that are not clearly separated, notably saphir teal. If you wish buy a multi-colored sapphire, note that our stones are systematically certified by a laboratory.
The combination of blue, green and yellow is one of the most common on multicolored sapphires. We also find a good number green and yellow sapphires. The most sought after have three different colors or very rare mixtures, such as purple (and similar shades) with blue.
Yellow is prevalent on these polychrome sapphires, indicating the presence of iron, often with blue, which can create shades of green, and sometimes, with other colors, such as orange or pink. As on the saphirs jaunes, this shade can be more or less intense.
Overall, we are looking for in jewelry multi-colored sapphire hues that are neither too light nor too dark, to clearly visualize the different areas of the stone. To create a bague saphir multi-colored, a wedding ring, or even another piece of jewelry like a bracelet or a necklace, the nuances of the stone are obviously very important, but also the cut.
Indeed, the size of the sapphire depends on the location of the different color zones. In addition to the weight criterion in carats, the most precious multi-colored sapphires are generally those whose colors separate towards the center, thanks to the way the gem was cut.
As hard as any other sapphire (9 on the Mohs scale), a multi-colored sapphire is an excellent choice for creating a timeless ring. Need help with your purchase of multicolored sapphire ? As a jewelry house and expert in precious stones, Bonnot Paris can advise you.
The multicolored sapphires are stones of great originality. However, they were relatively uncoveted until recent years, when less conventional stones became more attractive, like some spinelles.
Sapphires with several colors forming a gradient, like padparadscha, are traditionally more sought after in the world of jewelry.
Unexpected, even surprising, a blue and yellow sapphire, or blue, yellow and green is a stone that is particularly attractive for creating personalized jewelry and bold rings. It is the totally unique character of each gem that also attracts passionate collectors.
