Madagascar's sapphire mines are located mainly in the south, and have been in operation since the 1990s. It is therefore a more recent activity than the famous Ceylon sapphire. Nevertheless, the Ilakata region is home to one of the world's largest sapphire deposits, discovered in 1998. Madagascar blue sapphire in particular is found here .
Why is it so famous? Madagascar blue sapphires are characterized by a deep, saturated color and great clarity, but these gems are also appreciated because they can have quite a large carat weight. The geological conditions are exceptional, and Madagascar produces sapphires of the highest quality. What's more, the world's other sapphire mines, which were traditionally highly coveted, are tending to empty out.
For your purchase of Madagascar sapphire, we source through a short circuit and provide you with a certificate of authenticity, issued by a renowned gemmological laboratory. The reality of the sapphire mining industry in Madagascar is complex, but rapidly evolving. Mining companies, NGOs and the government are striving to regulate activities, to meet ethical challenges and for greater transparency.
While blue sapphires have made Madagascar's reputation, the country is also a major source of sapphires in other colors, starting with pink sapphires. The largest quantities are mined on the island, and Madagascar's pink sapphire is also renowned for its quality.
The Madagascar deposits are known for offering a variety of gemstones, including beautiful rubies, but also sapphires of different colors. Further north, yellow sapphires are mined. However, after blue and pink, the most sought-after sapphire is Madagascar green.
Green sapphire offers a palette of shades and therefore, many choices for the creation of rings and other jewelry. It's becoming commonplace to create rings in green sapphire from Madagascar, because once again, this island is generous when it comes to quality gems.
Madagascar blue sapphires come in all shapes and sizes, but when they're royal blue (dark blue) and unheated, the price goes through the roof. However, other blue sapphires from Madagascar are highly prized in jewelry, such as the rare
blue-gray sapphire and the superb teal sapphire. Most of the time, Madagascar blue sapphires are priced similarly to stones from other renowned countries, such as Sri Lanka.
Intensity, color and tone, not to mention carats and cut (to give it its shape) are the main criteria for pricing a gemstone. Madagascar star sapphire is a little different, cabochon-cut and inexpensive. It's not widely used for jewelry, but the stone with its six-pointed star appeals to many enthusiasts.
