Discover why oval sapphire has become a must-have in jewelry, the good reasons to make this choice and some criteria for finding the ideal stone.

Oval sapphire: a very common classic shape

Oval sapphire is the most popular stone shape in jewelry and fine jewelry. This is particularly the case of the blue sapphire also cut into round, square, cushion or pear. Of the sapphires of other colors are often oval shaped, too, but you can see more fancy with some, like the purple sapphire.

The appearance of the oval sapphire varies depending on the cut that was made. This is why you find oval sapphires with different numbers of facets. The brilliant cut is sought after because it highlights the stone with maximum brilliance. The cabochon cut is another example: a stone without facets and a domed upper part. In this case, brilliance is not sought after. But Most oval sapphires have many facets.

A gemstone can vary in quality, as well as in size or cut. Many stones are oval in shape or cut, a style that became popular during the 20th century.

Why choose an oval sapphire for a ring?

We have seen that the oval sapphire is usually faceted, for a beautiful sparkle. In addition, oval stones appear larger than other stones of the same weight. While the oval shape is popular for sapphires and other gemstones, including diamond, it is also because she fits multiple jewelry styles. For a sapphire engagement ring, you can have an imposing stone at a low cost and choose a modern or vintage style.

Note that there are different oval shapes of sapphire, as the stones can be more or less elongated, depending on the ratio between length and width. A oval daisy ring with sapphire and diamonds commonly has a moderate oval, rather than elongated, but with custom ring design it depends on taste.

Ring styles with an oval sapphire

Besides the oval sapphire cabochon ring, which has a polished surface, the rings have a shiny appearance, often enhanced by the presence of diamonds. However, this is not mandatory. It is possible to create very beautiful solitaire rings with oval sapphire without diamonds, especially if you like contemporary styles. Also, an oval sapphire can be accompanied by smaller round sapphires on an engagement ring or two other oval sapphires, for a trilogy ring. One of the most shimmering is the halo ring, with several small diamonds surrounding the sapphire.

With or without diamonds, a sapphire is perfect on all golds:

  • a white gold ring with oval sapphire: modern, elegant and luminous
  • a yellow gold ring: warm and timeless
  • a rose gold ring: soft, more romantic and rather contemporary
