Learn moreA two-tone sapphire is a stone that presents naturally two colors. It can come from any region of the world where are extracted. saphirs, like Madagascar or Sri Lanka, but they are relatively rare. There are also sapphires considered two-tone including translucent areas. Either they are very distinct, or they create transitions between two colors.
Although not commonly used in jewelry, the two-tone sapphire becomes popular. With its natural work of art appearance, it is a true treasure for specific requests for bespoke rings and other personalized jewelry, as well as for avid collectors. Each gem is absolutely unique. Several elements make up sapphires and they have particular concentrations. For example, a saphir rose is rich in chromium and a blue sapphire is concentrated in iron and titanium. A saphir blanc has no “impurities”. But if there is yellow with blue, on a two-tone sapphire, concentration is not the same everywhere. There are areas more loaded with iron.
This phenomenon depends on changes in geological conditions, which influence the formation of the corundum crystal, for example, pressure and temperature.
Another original stone to discover: thealexandrite.
The two-tone sapphires are appreciated for creating jewelry when the colors are close, like blue and purple, and even more when the contrast is more marked, like pink and yellow or green and orange.
However, the most sought after are especially those which have a beautiful gradual transition zone, soft and fluid, between the two colors. This creates almost dreamlike effects.
And another criterion of beauty and value is the presence of a dominant color. For example, we are looking for a two-tone sapphire with dominant blue with delicate touches of yellow, for a certain aesthetic coherence, rather than an overly variegated stone.
For connoisseurs, the most beautiful two-tone sapphires are variegated and this influences the price of these stones. However, some look for specimens in which the two colors are more clearly separated.
If you do créer une bague sur mesure, it’s your jewel and it’s your preference ! But be aware that the most prestigious are usually blue two-tone sapphires in the most traditionally sought-after shades, like royal blue.
The sale of two-tone sapphires is subject to the same conventions as other stones, in particular the fact that the issuance of a laboratory certificate will prove their authenticity. Like all the gems we offer you, our two-tone sapphires come with a certificate.
The cut or two-tone sapphire cut is very important, to enhance the different areas. Don't be surprised to sometimes see slightly atypical shapes: this is necessary to enhance certain color mixtures. Also discover the saphir padparadscha.
Note that the colors should look the same depending on the light. This is an important point for recognize a two-tone sapphire, unlike stones that change appearance under different light sources, a phenomenon called pleochroism.
