Origin of the Sapphire

Geographical sources and historical origins
Ceylon Sri Lanka
Cashmere
Madagascar

Sapphire has been known for a long time, although it was often confused with lapis lazuli in the past. It was in 1798 that sapphire was formally identified as a corundum by two French and English mineralogists.

There are three types of rocks: sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic. Sapphire is extracted from the latter two, on several continents. Some mines are rich in sapphires of particular colors, specific shades of blue, or of excellent quality.
The Ceylon sapphire (Sri Lanka) is renowned for its quality, allowing the creation of jewelry. Others are sought after in jewelry making, such as those from Burma, Kashmir in India, and the sapphire from Madagascar. Mines are also found in Thailand, Cambodia, Australia, Brazil, and the United States.

Sapphire deposits are not exploited because the quality is not up to standard, as is the case in Puy-de-Dôme.

Nowadays, sapphire engagement rings are among the most popular pieces of jewelry.

The value and quality of a Sapphire

How to determine the value of a sapphire?

Its value is determined by several criteria, including color, clarity, size, and cut. The classic blue hue remains the most popular, although sapphires come in a wide range of colors, from yellow to pink, as well as green and white.

It is crucial to note that the price of sapphire increases exponentially with its weight, as the larger the stone, the rarer it is.

Heat treatment also greatly influences the price of sapphires.

Buy one saphir is not a trivial act, since there are excellent imitations, stones that have undergone treatments that are not disclosed, and others sold without a gemology certificate, among the main risks.

The Bonnot company only sells sapphires with a certificate of authenticity, issued by a gemology laboratory, the same applies to our other stones. We also obtain them without any intermediaries, which allows us to offer you the best prices and quality guarantees. You also have a wide selection to personalize a unique creation.

Treatment and enhancement of Sapphire

What are these treatments?

Chauffe à haute température : Practiced since Antiquity, this firing is carried out in traditional kilns that can reach up to 1,800°C.

Chauffe à basse température : This treatment is generally carried out between 800 and 1,200 °C, and improves the color and transparency of the sapphire while preserving its structure. It is often used for stones with less intense color, thus offering a subtle enhancement.

Chauffe au béryllium : This method involves heating sapphires in the presence of beryllium, a chemical element that alters their color, particularly to intensify yellow or orange hues. Although this technique is effective, it is controversial because it changes the chemical composition of the sapphire.

For this reason, Bonnot Paris chooses not to select stones that have undergone this beryllium treatment.

Our Sourcing of Precious Stones

At Bonnot Paris, we are committed to providing the best precious stones through rigorous and ethical sourcing.

We've developed three main sourcing methods to ensure the quality and traceability of our gems: directly from mines, through brokers, and from renowned cutting centers. Discover our methods in detail below.

LEVEL 1

Directly at the mine

We favor direct partnerships with mines, which allows us to obtain rough gemstones directly from the source.

Our partnerships span the globe, including Africa (Namibia, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya), Vietnam, and Sri Lanka. We carefully select gemstones based on their quality and then have them cut by our workshops in France and Bangkok, ensuring complete control over the transformation process.

LEVEL 2

From local Brokers

Our collaborations with international brokers allow us to acquire precious stones over a wide geographical area.

These brokers, based in Africa, Brazil, Colombia, and Vietnam, travel across vast territories to source gemstones that meet our strict criteria of quality, traceability, and price. The purchased rough stones are then cut in our specialized workshops in France and Bangkok.

LEVEL 3

From the main pruning centers

We have strategically located offices in Jaipur, Bangkok and Beruwala (Sri Lanka).

These centers allow us to purchase pre-cut gemstones, such as Zambian emeralds in Jaipur or sapphires and other various gemstones in Sri Lanka and Bangkok. Thanks to these offices, we can precisely meet the specific demands of our customers by offering a wide range of high-quality stones.

More competitive prices

More competitive prices

These three levels of sourcing allow us to offer you the best precious stones at the best price, while guaranteeing their origin and exceptional quality.

We are committed to maintaining these standards to continue to satisfy our most demanding customers.

LEVEL 4 - NOT APPLIED AT BONNOT PARIS

From Merchants Resellers

The vast majority of traditional jewelers use dealers in their country to buy their stones.

This results in a limited choice of products and, above all, prices that are far removed from market prices.

LEVEL 5 - NOT APPLIED AT BONNOT PARIS

At the jeweler

Once again, the majority of jewelers tend to favor the sale of their own stones to the detriment of customer desires.

By offering only a limited selection, the jeweler inevitably influences the choice. At Bonnot Paris, it's the customer who chooses, and we source the ideal stone for their needs.

Certification and Ethics: OurCommitments

Certification and ethics are essential pillars of Maison Bonnot Paris. Each stone we offer is certified by renowned independent laboratories, such as GIA, AIGS, ICA, LFG, and SSEF.

This guarantees the authenticity and quality of our gems. In addition, we pride ourselves on knowing the origin of the majority of the stones we offer.

Many come from brokers located in extraction areas we know well, ensuring impeccable traceability and ethics.

Although ethics is at the heart of our commitment, we recognize that much remains to be done in this area.

We are committed to continuing our efforts to ensure responsible and ethical sourcing of every stone.
