‍Sri Lanka : Remaining the main supplier of blue sapphires on the current market, with centuries-old extraction. The iconic shade of these gems is moreover named "Ceylon Blue".

Madagascar : Today, this island has become the second largest source of sapphires, renowned for the high quality of its stones. However, supply is sometimes hindered by government moratoriums on exports.

Cashmere: Although less well known to the general public, this region has produced some of the most sumptuous sapphires in the world. Production is now anecdotal, which gives these gems exceptional rarity.

Australia: Sapphires are mainly mined in New South Wales and Queensland.‍

Blue sapphire is also found in Burma, Thailand, and Montana in the United States, each offering unique characteristics that enrich the global market for these gems.‍

The value and quality of a Blue Sapphire

How to determine the value of a blue sapphire?

Firstly, the larger the stone, the rarer it is. That is why a good quality heated blue sapphire of 1 carat will cost around €1000 per carat, while a 3-carat blue sapphire of equivalent quality will cost around €2000 per carat.

‍Heat treatment also greatly influences the price of blue sapphires. In fact, an unheated stone will cost about 30% more for stones of 1 to 2 carats, and this price can be multiplied by 10 or more for higher weights.

Today, the most expensive and also the rarest blue sapphires come from Kashmir. The most beautiful among them are traded at several tens of thousands of dollars per carat. In 2021, a 27-carat Kashmir blue sapphire was auctioned for 2.1 million euros. Other highly sought-after and much more affordable blue sapphires come from Sri Lanka and of Madagascar, which offer very good quality. In this case, for a stone of the same quality, a blue sapphire from Sri Lanka will be more expensive than a blue sapphire from Madagascar.

Treatment and enhancement of Blue Sapphire

What are these treatments?

‍Chauffe à haute température : Practiced since Antiquity, this firing is carried out in traditional kilns that can reach up to 1,800°C.

‍Chauffe à basse température : This treatment is generally carried out between 800 and 1,200 °C, and improves the color and transparency of the sapphire while preserving its structure. It is often used for stones with less intense color, thus offering a subtle enhancement.

‍Chauffe au béryllium : This method involves heating sapphires in the presence of beryllium, a chemical element that alters their color, particularly to intensify yellow or orange hues. Although this technique is effective, it is controversial because it changes the chemical composition of the sapphire.

For this reason, Bonnot Paris chooses not to select stones that have undergone this beryllium treatment.

Directly at the mine

We favor direct partnerships with mines, which allows us to obtain rough gemstones directly from the source.

Our partnerships span the globe, including Africa (Namibia, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya), Vietnam, and Sri Lanka. We carefully select gemstones based on their quality and then have them cut by our workshops in France and Bangkok, ensuring complete control over the transformation process.

LEVEL 2

From local Brokers

Our collaborations with international brokers allow us to acquire precious stones over a wide geographical area.

These brokers, based in Africa, Brazil, Colombia, and Vietnam, travel across vast territories to source gemstones that meet our strict criteria of quality, traceability, and price. The purchased rough stones are then cut in our specialized workshops in France and Bangkok.

LEVEL 3

From the main pruning centers

We have strategically located offices in Jaipur, Bangkok and Beruwala (Sri Lanka).

These centers allow us to purchase pre-cut gemstones, such as Zambian emeralds in Jaipur or sapphires and other various gemstones in Sri Lanka and Bangkok. Thanks to these offices, we can precisely meet the specific demands of our customers by offering a wide range of high-quality stones.
