Origin of the stone:

Historical and geographical sources
Burma (Myanmar)
Mozambique
Madagascar

The Birmanie has long been the origin of some of the world's most beautiful rubies. Mogok, located in the northern region of the country, has been the main source of these legendary "pigeon blood" rubies since the 6th century. The distinctive hue of Burmese rubies, a deep red with a slight purplish tint, has captivated the hearts of gem connoisseurs for centuries.

Mozambique: In recent years, Mozambique has established itself as a major source of high-quality rubies. Discovered in the Montepuez region in 2009, these rubies display a rich red color that rivals their Burmese counterparts. The majority of the world's rubies now come from Mozambique, playing a significant role in the global ruby market. Discover our rubis du Mozambique with purchase.

‍Madagascar: The island nation of Madagascar is known for producing a range of fine gemstones, including rubies. First discovered in the late 1990s, Malagasy rubies mainly come from the regions of Andilamena and Vatomandry. These rubies display a vibrant red hue with slightly orangish tones and are highly sought after for their brilliance and clarity.

Other sources of Ruby exist, such as Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania. We also create your bague de fiançailles en rubis.

The value and quality of a Ruby:

How to determine the value of a ruby?

The most significant factor in determining the value of a ruby is its color. The most desirable hue is a deep, vivid red with a very slight hint of blue, often referred to as "pigeon blood" red. Rubies with a strong and saturated color command higher prices, while those with pale or overly dark tones are generally less expensive.

As with other gemstones, larger rubies are rarer and generally more valuable. However, it is important to consider the overall quality of the gem, as a smaller ruby with exceptional color and clarity may be more valuable than a larger stone with inferior attributes. The cut of a ruby can greatly affect its beauty and value. A well-cut ruby will enhance the color, clarity, and brilliance of the gem, while a poorly cut stone may diminish its appeal. Skilled cutting also ensures proper proportions and symmetry, which can further enhance the value of the ruby. For example, a 1-carat unheated, top-quality Pigeon Blood Ruby from Burma will cost €8,000. A ruby of the same quality can reach €200,000 for a weight of 3 carats.

The geographical origin of a ruby can influence its value, some locations are renowned for producing exceptional stones. Historically, Burmese (Myanmar) rubies have been highly prized for their rich and saturated colors. However, high-quality rubies from Mozambique, Madagascar, and other sources can also command high prices.

The value and quality of a Ruby:

Treatment and enhancement of Ruby

What are these treatments?

One most rubies undergo treatments to enhance their color and clarity. Although treated rubies are generally more affordable, untreated stones of exceptional quality are rarer and can reach much higher prices.

The traditional heating of rubies has been practiced for centuries. The objective is to improve the color or clarity of the stones. This process is carried out in a traditional furnace at temperatures between 800°C and 1800°C, depending on the rough stone and the desired result.

Other treatments exist, such as filling cracks (e.g., with oil), heating with a flux (borax), or heat treatment with lead glass filling. The purpose of these treatments is to fill inclusions in order to enhance their brilliance. Diffusion treatment alters the color of a stone by diffusing chemical elements (such as titanium or beryllium) at high temperatures. The new shade remains superficial and may fade if the stone is worn or repolished. This treatment artificially alters the appearance of the gem.

Bonnot is here to support you and help you find the perfect stone.

Our Sourcing of Precious Stones

At Bonnot Paris, we are committed to providing the best precious stones through rigorous and ethical sourcing.

We've developed three main sourcing methods to ensure the quality and traceability of our gems: directly from mines, through brokers, and from renowned cutting centers. Discover our methods in detail below.

LEVEL 1

Directly at the mine

We favor direct partnerships with mines, which allows us to obtain rough gemstones directly from the source.

Our partnerships span the globe, including Africa (Namibia, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya), Vietnam, and Sri Lanka. We carefully select gemstones based on their quality and then have them cut by our workshops in France and Bangkok, ensuring complete control over the transformation process.

LEVEL 2

From local Brokers

Our collaborations with international brokers allow us to acquire precious stones over a wide geographical area.

These brokers, based in Africa, Brazil, Colombia, and Vietnam, travel across vast territories to source gemstones that meet our strict criteria of quality, traceability, and price. The purchased rough stones are then cut in our specialized workshops in France and Bangkok.

LEVEL 3

From the main pruning centers

We have strategically located offices in Jaipur, Bangkok and Beruwala (Sri Lanka).

These centers allow us to purchase pre-cut gemstones, such as Zambian emeralds in Jaipur or sapphires and other various gemstones in Sri Lanka and Bangkok. Thanks to these offices, we can precisely meet the specific demands of our customers by offering a wide range of high-quality stones.

More competitive prices

More competitive prices

These three levels of sourcing allow us to offer you the best precious stones at the best price, while guaranteeing their origin and exceptional quality.

We are committed to maintaining these standards to continue to satisfy our most demanding customers.

LEVEL 4 - NOT APPLIED AT BONNOT PARIS

From Merchants Resellers

The vast majority of traditional jewelers use dealers in their country to buy their stones.

This results in a limited choice of products and, above all, prices that are far removed from market prices.

LEVEL 5 - NOT APPLIED AT BONNOT PARIS

At the jeweler

Once again, the majority of jewelers tend to favor the sale of their own stones to the detriment of customer desires.

By offering only a limited selection, the jeweler inevitably influences the choice. At Bonnot Paris, it's the customer who chooses, and we source the ideal stone for their needs.

Certification and Ethics: OurCommitments

Certification and ethics are essential pillars of Maison Bonnot Paris. Each stone we offer is certified by renowned independent laboratories, such as GIA, AIGS, ICA, LFG, and SSEF.

This guarantees the authenticity and quality of our gems. In addition, we pride ourselves on knowing the origin of the majority of the stones we offer.

Many come from brokers located in extraction areas we know well, ensuring impeccable traceability and ethics.

Although ethics is at the heart of our commitment, we recognize that much remains to be done in this area.

We are committed to continuing our efforts to ensure responsible and ethical sourcing of every stone.
