A bicolor sapphire is a stone that naturally displays two colors. It can come from any sapphire-mining region in the world, such as Madagascar or Sri Lanka, but is relatively rare. There are also sapphires considered bicolored that include translucent zones. These are either quite distinct, or create transitions between two colors.
Although not commonly used in jewelry, two-tone sapphire is becoming popular. With its natural work-of-art look, it is a treasure trove for specific requests for bespoke rings and other personalized jewelry, as well as for passionate collectors. Each gem is absolutely unique.
This phenomenon depends on changes in geological conditions, which influence the formation of corundum crystals, such as pressure and temperature.
Another original stone to discover:alexandrite.
Two-tone sapphires are popular for jewelry when the colors are close, such as blue and violet, and even more so when the contrast is more marked, such as pink and yellow or green and orange.
The most sought-after, however, are those with a beautiful, smooth, gradual transition zone between the two colors. This creates almost dreamlike effects.
Another criterion of beauty and value is the presence of a dominant color. For example, a two-tone sapphire with a predominantly blue hue and delicate touches of yellow is preferable to an overly variegated stone, for a certain aesthetic coherence.
For connoisseurs, the most beautiful bicolored sapphires are variegated, and this influences the price of these stones. However, some seek out specimens in which the two colors are more clearly separated.
If you're having a ring made to measure, it's your jewel and your preference! But you should know that the most prestigious are usually two-tone blue sapphires in the most traditionally sought-after shades, like royal blue.
The sale of bicolor sapphires is subject to the same conventions as other stones, notably the fact that the issuance of a laboratory certificate will prove their authenticity. Like all the gems we offer, our bicolor sapphires come with a certificate.
The cut or size of the two-tone sapphire is very important, to enhance the different zones. Don't be surprised if you sometimes see slightly atypical shapes: this is necessary to enhance certain color combinations. Discover also padparadscha sapphire.
Note that the colors must maintain the same appearance according to the light. This is an important point in recognizing a two-tone sapphire, unlike stones that change appearance under different light sources, a phenomenon known as pleochroism.
Bonnot Paris can advise you on the choice of a two-tone sapphire for a ring, both in terms of hue and shape, depending on your project.
