The blue sapphire is the reigning stone of fine jewellery, and the most sought-after choice for a blue sapphire engagement ring. It shares with the ruby the title of second-hardest gemstone in the world (9 on the Mohs scale), surpassed only by the diamond. Its palette seems infinite: from the most delicate pastel blue to the mythical Kashmir blue, each shade tells a different story and evokes a different emotion.
Connoisseurs recognise the great appellations: Royal Blue, intense and slightly violet, the absolute benchmark of fine jewellery; Ceylon Blue, vivid and luminous, emblematic of Sri Lanka; Cornflower, velvety and balanced, evoking the flower it is named after; and Kashmir Blue, a rare and silky shade with violet undertones, now almost impossible to find since the historic mines were exhausted.

Blue sapphires display a rich spectrum of colours, each with its own character and its own place in the market.
Cornflower is one of the most coveted shades at present, offering a deep blue tone that is neither too light nor too dark — capturing the very essence of a summer sky.
Royal Blue remains a timeless classic, with a deep, near-navy hue that evokes elegance and nobility.
Ceylon Blue, synonymous with sapphires from Sri Lanka, is equally prized for its luminosity and softness, reminiscent of clear tropical waters.
Finally, Kashmir Blue, characteristic of sapphires from that region, is distinguished by a deep, silky blue with a gentle violet cast — like a starlit night.
Each shade has its own characteristics and its own price range. Kashmir Blue, for example, can command extraordinary values due to its rarity and high demand. Ceylon Blue is appreciated for its availability and universal appeal.
At Bonnot Paris, we understand the importance of these distinctions and are committed to guiding you towards the choice that best suits your project, with unimpeachable quality and provenance.

The blue sapphire is mined in many countries, each with its own reputation and distinctive characteristics:
• Sri Lanka: this country remains the leading supplier of blue sapphires on the current market, with a centuries-old mining tradition. The emblematic shade of its stones is known as Ceylon Blue.
• Madagascar: this island has become the second-largest source of sapphires, recognised for the high quality of its stones. Supply is, however, sometimes affected by government export moratoriums.
• Kashmir: though less well known to the general public, this region has yielded some of the most magnificent sapphires in the world. Production there is now negligible, which gives these stones an exceptional rarity.
• Australia: sapphires are mined primarily in New South Wales and Queensland.
Blue sapphires are also found in Burma, Thailand and Montana in the United States, each source offering unique characteristics that enrich the global market for these remarkable stones.

The value of a blue sapphire varies considerably according to several key criteria: the intensity of its colour, its clarity, its weight, its origin and its rarity.
It is important to note that the price of a sapphire increases exponentially with its weight, as larger stones are inherently rarer. For example, a good-quality heat-treated blue sapphire of 1 carat will cost approximately €1,000 per carat, whereas a comparable 3-carat stone will cost around €2,000 per carat.
Heat treatment also has a significant bearing on the price of blue sapphires. An untreated stone will cost approximately 30% more for stones between 1 and 2 carats, and this premium can be multiplied tenfold or more for larger weights.
Today, the most expensive and rarest blue sapphires come from Kashmir. The finest examples trade at several tens of thousands of dollars per carat.
Other highly sought-after and considerably more accessible blue sapphires come from Sri Lanka and Madagascar, both of which offer excellent quality. For a comparable stone, a Sri Lankan blue sapphire will command a higher price than one from Madagascar.

Merci beaucoup 😋
