Our Precious Stone Sourcing

At Bonnot Paris, we are committed to offering the finest precious stones through a rigorous and ethical sourcing process.

We have developed three principal sourcing methods to guarantee the quality and traceability of our gemstones: directly from mines, through brokers, and from renowned cutting centres. Discover our detailed methods below.

LEVEL 1

Directly from the mine

We prioritise direct partnerships with mines, allowing us to obtain rough precious stones straight from the source.

Our partnerships span the globe, reaching across Africa (Namibia, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya), Vietnam and Sri Lanka. By carefully selecting gemstones according to their quality, we then have them cut by our workshops in France and Bangkok, ensuring complete control over the transformation process.

LEVEL 2

From local brokers

Our relationships with international brokers enable us to acquire precious stones across a wide geographical reach.

These brokers, based in Africa, Brazil, Colombia, and Vietnam, travel vast territories to source gemstones that meet our strict criteria for quality, traceability, and value. The rough stones acquired are then cut in specialist cutting workshops in France and Bangkok.

LEVEL 3

From the leading cutting centres

We have offices strategically located in Jaipur, Bangkok and Beruwala (Sri Lanka).

These centres allow us to source already-cut precious stones, such as Zambian emeralds in Jaipur or sapphires and other varied gemstones in Sri Lanka and Bangkok. Through these offices, we are able to respond precisely to our clients' specific requests by offering a wide range of superior-quality stones.

More competitive prices logo

More competitive prices

These three levels of sourcing allow us to offer you the finest precious stones at the best possible price, while guaranteeing their origin and exceptional quality.

We are committed to upholding these standards in order to continue satisfying our most discerning clients.

LEVEL 4 — NOT PRACTISED AT BONNOT PARIS

From reseller traders

The vast majority of traditional jewellers rely on reseller traders in their home country to purchase their stones.

The result is a limited product selection and, above all, prices far removed from market rates.

LEVEL 5 — NOT PRACTISED AT BONNOT PARIS

At the jeweller

More often than not, jewellers tend to favour selling their own stones rather than seeking out what their clients truly desire.

By offering only a limited selection, a jeweller inevitably steers your choice. At Bonnot Paris, the client decides, and we source the perfect stone to suit their needs.

Certification and Ethics: Our CommitmentsCertification and Ethics: Our Commitments logo

Certification and Ethics: Our Commitments

Certification and ethics are cornerstones of Maison Bonnot Paris. Every stone we offer is certified by renowned independent laboratories, including the GIA, AIGS, ICA, LFG and SSEF.

This guarantees the authenticity and quality of our gemstones. We are also proud to know the origin of the great majority of the stones we offer.

Many come from brokers located in the mining regions we know well, ensuring impeccable traceability and ethical standards.

While ethics are central to our commitment, we recognise that there is still much to be done in this area.

We are determined to continue our efforts to ensure the responsible and ethical provenance of every stone

Our Responsible CommitmentCertification and Ethics: Our Commitments logo

Our Responsible Commitment

For ethically sourced precious stones and full supply-chain transparency

At Bonnot Paris, we are committed to promoting responsible and transparent practices in the coloured stone market — a sector that is largely artisanal and where tracing the precise origin of stones is often a significant challenge. Fully aware of this difficulty, we do everything in our power to guarantee the ethical origin of our precious stones, in compliance with the commitments and due-diligence standards set by the OECD.

We make a point of not sourcing stones from politically high-risk regions, such as Ethiopia and Burma. By working with the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM), we support artisanal mining cooperatives in improving their practices and working conditions. While we cannot guarantee 100% accountability for every stone we carry, our proximity to the mines allows us to reduce the risk of error considerably compared with those who operate at a distance from the source.

Furthermore, we reinvest 1% of our turnover from precious stone sales into development programmes in partnership with the ARM. This commitment enables us to contribute directly to improving living and working conditions in artisanal mining communities.

At Bonnot Paris, we firmly believe that transparency and accountability are essential to offering our clients exceptional stones while upholding strong ethical values.

The Traceability of Our Precious StonesCertification and Ethics: Our Commitments logo

The Traceability of Our Precious Stones

Transparency and Precision at Every Stage

At Bonnot Paris, traceability is at the heart of our commitment to our clients. The more precise information we obtain, and the earlier we step into the supply chain, the more confidently we can guarantee the traceability of our precious stones. Working directly with mines allows us to certify the exact origin of each stone — a crucial step in ensuring both authenticity and provenance.

For a tourmaline, for instance, we commit to providing precise information on its origin, specifying not only the country but also the region of extraction. Whether the stone comes from Tanzania, Brazil, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria or Mozambique, we strive to give the most accurate location possible.

When we work with brokers, we make certain to obtain and pass on this detailed information to our clients. Equally, when purchasing at the major cutting centres, we systematically require origin information and select our partners with great care, so as to eliminate any ambiguity regarding the provenance of our stones.

For certain stones, we call upon certification laboratories to confirm their origin. This is standard practice at Bonnot Paris. On occasion, we provide laboratories with additional evidence to help correct and refine their traceability models, drawing on our in-depth knowledge and our own on-the-ground investigations.

Our goal is always to provide our clients with the fullest possible information, in complete transparency. The rigorous traceability of our precious stones not only guarantees their authenticity, but also strengthens the trust and satisfaction of our clients.

At Maison Bonnot Paris, we firmly believe that transparency and precision are essential to offering exceptional stones and robust assurances about their provenance.

FAQ

An ethical precious stone meets criteria relating to environmental protection and human rights, covering its extraction from a mine, but also taking into account where the stone is cut. Mining is not the only stage of the process that can prove problematic, whether for workers or for ecological concerns.

No label exists to verify these criteria, despite this being the case for many consumer goods. The world of gemstones is extraordinarily complex, not least because a country may be regarded as a source of certain ethical stones, yet not for others, or not across all of its regions.

That said, a stone may be described as a responsible stone when it is, first and foremost, traceable: its origin can be established and information obtained about the area from which it was extracted.

What each person prioritises may vary, but conscientious professionals and discerning buyers generally seek stones that are:

  • sourced from mines where workers are treated well, fairly paid and operate in safe conditions;
  • extracted with minimal impact on the environment;
  • not connected to the financing of armed conflicts or terrorist groups.

This industry is not without its flaws, yet there are many ethically sourced stones to be found. Across the world, a number of mining companies, mines, cutting centres and brokers are recognised for their commitment to upholding ethical standards. Precious-stone specialists such as Maison Bonnot prefer to turn to these suppliers.

When a buyer knows the origin of a precious stone and this can be guaranteed by the seller, it is often possible to obtain further information. That said, such a guarantee does not always imply full transparency at every stage of the supply chain. To purchase stones that are as eco-responsible and ethical as possible, the ideal approach is to favour shorter supply chains.

When buying stones with a responsible approach in mind, the fewer parties involved in the supply chain, the easier it becomes to verify the practices of each actor along the way. See our jewellery care guide for precious and semi-precious stones for advice on keeping your stones at their finest.
