Merci beaucoup 😋

How is my stone delivered?

Blue sapphires display a rich palette of shades, each with its own character and its own place in the market.

Cornflower blue is one of the most sought-after shades today, offering a deep blue that is neither too light nor too dark — capturing the very essence of a summer sky.

Royal Blue remains a timeless classic, with a deep, navy-like hue that evokes elegance and nobility.

Ceylon Blue, specific to sapphires from Sri Lanka, is highly prized for its luminosity and softness, reminiscent of the clarity of tropical waters.

Finally, Kashmir Blue, characteristic of sapphires from that region, is distinguished by a deep, silky blue with a subtle violet undertone — like a starlit night.

Each shade has its own characteristics and its own price segment. Kashmir Blue, for instance, can reach remarkable heights in value due to its rarity and high demand. Ceylon Blue is appreciated for its availability and universal appeal.

At Bonnot Paris, we understand the importance of these distinctions and are committed to guiding you towards the choice that best suits your project, ensuring irreproachable quality and provenance.

What are the different shades of blue sapphire?

Blue sapphire is mined in many countries, each with its own reputation and character:

• Sri Lanka: the leading supplier of blue sapphires on the current market, with a centuries-old mining tradition. The iconic shade associated with these gems is known as Ceylon Blue.

• Madagascar
: now the second-largest source of sapphires, recognised for the high quality of its stones. Supply can, however, be affected by government export moratoriums.

• Kashmir
: less well known to the general public, this region has yielded some of the most magnificent sapphires in the world. Production there is now negligible, lending these gems an exceptional rarity.

• Australia
: sapphires are mined principally in New South Wales and Queensland.

Blue sapphire is also found in Burma, Thailand and Montana in the United States, each offering unique characteristics that enrich the global market for these stones.

Where does blue sapphire come from?

The value of blue sapphire varies considerably according to several key criteria: colour intensity, clarity, weight, origin and rarity.

It is important to note that the price of sapphire rises exponentially with weight, since larger stones are increasingly rare. For example, a good-quality heated blue sapphire of 1 carat will cost approximately €1,000 per carat, while a blue sapphire of equivalent quality at 3 carats will cost around €2,000 per carat.

Heat treatment also has a significant bearing on the price of blue sapphires. An unheated stone will cost approximately 30% more for stones between 1 and 2 carats, and this premium can be multiplied tenfold or more for larger weights.

Today, the rarest and most valuable blue sapphires come from Kashmir. The finest examples trade at several tens of thousands of dollars per carat.

Other highly sought-after and far more accessible blue sapphires come from Sri Lanka and Madagascar, both offering excellent quality. For a comparable stone, a Sri Lankan blue sapphire will command a higher price than one from Madagascar.
