FAQ — SPINEL ENGAGEMENT RINGS
Yes. With a hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale and a natural brilliance, spinel is an excellent alternative to sapphire or ruby for everyday wear. Its durability means it will remain beautiful for decades.
Unlike sapphire or ruby, spinel is almost never heated or treated. It is a naturally pure stone — a compelling premium quality in its own right. You are wearing a gem exactly as nature intended.
Spinel registers 8 on the Mohs scale. It sits just below sapphire and ruby (9) and above emerald (7.5–8), making it very well suited to a stone worn every day.
Fine-quality spinels display exceptional transparency and very few visible inclusions. This is one of the reasons for their outstanding brilliance, which often surpasses that of ruby.
The neon pink-red of Mahenge spinels from Tanzania is currently the most coveted shade, followed by deep red close to ruby. Spinel also comes in violet, blue, steel grey and mauve.
Mahenge spinel comes from deposits discovered in 2007 in the Mahenge region of Tanzania. It is celebrated for its spectacular fluorescent pink-red hues, among the most intense found in the mineral world.
Ruby and spinel are entirely distinct minerals. Historically the two were confused: the famous Black Prince's Ruby in the British Crown Jewels is, in fact, a spinel. Spinel offers a livelier brilliance and, unlike most rubies, is not treated.
