Colombian emeralds have been historically recognised as the most beautiful in the world for two reasons. First, their colour: a pure, slightly bluish green of incomparable saturation, owed to the unique geological conditions of Colombian deposits (hydrothermal formation within sedimentary rock). Second, their transparency: Colombian emeralds tend to display a more discreet internal landscape than stones from other origins. Three historic mines produce the majority of Colombian emeralds: Muzo (Boyacá department), regarded as the benchmark mine for its intense, velvety greens; Chivor, north-east of Bogotá, which yields emeralds with a slightly bluer green; and Coscuez, neighbouring Muzo, whose stones are prized for their rich saturation. Muzo emeralds display an intense, velvety green with a slight warm, yellowish cast, widely regarded as the pinnacle of chromatic perfection. They tend to contain more characteristic inclusions (calcite crystals, traces of pyrite). Chivor emeralds offer a slightly bluer green, often cleaner and more transparent, with fewer visible inclusions. At equivalent quality, a Muzo generally commands a higher price than a Chivor, owing to its historic prestige. The choice ultimately comes down to the chromatic character you seek: velvety intensity for Muzo, crystalline freshness for Chivor.

Price varies considerably with quality. For an oiled 1-carat Colombian emerald of average quality, expect €2,000–4,000 per carat; for a fine-quality stone of 1–2 carats, €4,000–10,000 per carat; and for an exceptional, unoiled stone, €15,000–50,000 per carat — and well beyond that at auction. At equivalent quality, a Colombian emerald typically trades at two to three times the price of a Zambian emerald.

The only reliable proof is an origin certificate issued by a recognised independent gemological laboratory (SSEF, GRS, Gübelin, GIA, AGL). These laboratories determine origin through spectroscopic analysis of the stone's characteristic inclusions and chemical composition — each deposit leaves a distinct geological signature. Be wary of any seller who asserts Colombian origin without an independent certificate. Yes — more than 99% of Colombian emeralds on the market have been oiled. Treatment with cedarwood oil (or a colourless resin) is applied almost universally to improve visual transparency by filling natural fissures. A no-oil Colombian emerald is exceedingly rare and represents a true investment-grade stone — expect to pay two to five times the price of an equivalent oiled stone. The certificate must explicitly state the degree of treatment: "no oil", "insignificant", "minor", "moderate" or "significant", in accordance with CIBJO/SSEF standards.

Several factors account for this rarity. Geologically, the conditions required to form Colombian emeralds are unique and exist almost nowhere else on earth. Political instability and the historical presence of armed groups in certain mining regions limited extraction and disrupted export flows for decades. Finally, global demand — particularly strong from Asia and the Middle East — continues to tighten supply. Truly fine stones above 3 carats have become especially difficult to source.
