Born of the beryl family, the Colombian Emerald is celebrated the world over for its vivid green and exceptional clarity. The mines of Colombia — Muzo, Chivor and Coscuez — yield emeralds of the highest order, with green hues ranging from medium to deep and a brilliance that is truly their own. Merci beaucoup 😋

FAQ — Colombian Emeralds

Colombian emeralds have been historically regarded as the world's most beautiful for two reasons. Their colour first: a pure green with a faint blue undertone and unrivalled saturation, born of the unique geological conditions found in Colombian deposits — hydrothermal formation within sedimentary rock. Their transparency second: Colombian emeralds tend to display a more discreet internal garden than stones of other origins. It is this combination that has made them the absolute benchmark of fine jewellery since pre-Columbian times — the Mayas and Aztecs already held them in the highest esteem.

Three historic mines account for the great majority of Colombian emeralds: Muzo (Boyacá department), regarded as the queen of mines for its intense, velvety greens; Chivor, north-east of Bogotá, which yields emeralds with a slightly bluer green; and Coscuez, neighbour to Muzo, whose stones are prized for their rich saturation. A more recent fourth mine, La Pita, is gaining recognition. Each origin carries a distinct chromatic signature that specialists can identify through gemological examination. Bonnot Paris sources its Colombian emeralds through its Jaipur office.

Muzo emeralds display an intense, velvety green with a slight warmth, considered by many to represent chromatic perfection. They tend to contain more characteristic inclusions — calcite crystals, traces of pyrite. Chivor emeralds offer a slightly bluer green, often more transparent and cleaner, with fewer visible inclusions. At equivalent quality, a Muzo typically commands a higher price than a Chivor, owing to its historic prestige. The choice comes down to the chromatic character you seek: velvety intensity from Muzo, crystalline freshness from Chivor.

Prices vary considerably according to quality. For a 1-carat oiled Colombian emerald of average quality, expect €2,000 to €4,000 per carat; for a fine-quality stone of 1 to 2 carats, €4,000 to €10,000 per carat; and for an exceptional no-oil stone, €15,000 to €50,000 per carat — and well beyond that at auction. At equivalent quality, a Colombian emerald typically trades at two to three times the price of a Zambian emerald.

The only reliable proof is an origin certificate issued by a recognised independent gemological laboratory (SSEF, GRS, Gübelin, GIA, AGL). These laboratories determine origin through spectroscopic analysis of characteristic inclusions and the stone's chemical composition — each deposit leaves a distinct geological fingerprint. Be wary of any seller who claims Colombian origin without an independent certificate. At Bonnot Paris, every emerald sold as 'Colombian' is accompanied by an origin certificate from an accredited laboratory.

In practice, yes — more than 99% of Colombian emeralds on the market have been oiled. Treatment with cedar oil or a colourless resin is applied almost universally to improve visual transparency by filling natural fissures. A no-oil Colombian emerald is exceptionally rare and represents a true investment-grade stone — expect to pay two to five times the price of a comparable oiled stone. The certificate must explicitly state the degree of treatment: 'no oil', 'insignificant', 'minor', 'moderate' or 'significant', in line with CIBJO/SSEF standards.

Several factors explain this rarity. Geologically, the conditions that give rise to Colombian emeralds are unique and virtually unrepeatable anywhere else on earth. Political instability and the historic presence of armed groups in certain mining regions restricted output and disrupted export flows for decades. Finally, global demand — particularly strong from Asia and the Middle East — further tightens the market. Truly fine stones above 3 carats have become especially difficult to source.

The Colombian emerald offers a pure, slightly blue-tinged green — intense and velvety — with an unmatched historic prestige: the heritage choice par excellence. The Zambian emerald presents a richer, sometimes slightly warmer green, generally cleaner (with fewer visible inclusions) and more robust thanks to that superior clarity. On price, Zambian stones are two to three times less expensive at equivalent quality. For a heritage investment or a truly exceptional piece, Colombia is the natural choice. For an engagement ring at the finest quality-to-price ratio, Zambia is hard to beat.
