Orange sapphires come primarily from three countries. Sri Lanka remains the benchmark for vivid, luminous hues. Madagascar has established itself since the 1990s as the world's second major source. Tanzania also produces beautiful orange sapphires with deep, intense colour. At Bonnot Paris, we source our orange sapphires directly through our office in Sri Lanka.

Price depends on four criteria: colour, clarity, treatment and origin. Expect to pay €600 to €1,500 per carat for a good-quality heat-treated orange sapphire of around 1 carat. For 2–3 carats of equivalent quality, the range rises to €2,000–€4,000 per carat. An unheated orange sapphire typically commands 30–50% more. Orange sapphires with a pure, intense mandarin hue can exceed €5,000 per carat.

The padparadscha is an ultra-rare variety defined by its characteristic pink-orange hue. Leading laboratories (SSEF, GRS, AGL) apply very strict colour criteria to qualify it. A standard orange sapphire displays a dominant orange tone, without the pink component that defines a padparadscha. Carats for carat and at equivalent quality, the padparadscha is five to ten times more expensive. It originates almost exclusively from Sri Lanka.

The orange colour of a sapphire comes from trace combinations of iron and chromium within its crystal structure. Iron provides the dominant yellow base. Chromium adds pinkish overtones and amplifies the overall intensity. The more precise the balance between the two elements, the more the hue shifts toward mandarin or red-orange. Some orange sapphires display this colour naturally. Others reveal their warmth only after heating at high temperature.

Most orange sapphires on the market undergo high-temperature heat treatment. This traditional process intensifies colour, is internationally accepted and raises no concerns about durability. However, particular care should be taken regarding beryllium treatment. This more recent method artificially forces an orange hue into colourless or dull sapphires. It alters the chemical structure of the stone. Bonnot Paris strictly refuses this treatment. We do not sell any orange sapphire treated with beryllium.
