Burmese ruby is the legend of the gem world. For five centuries, the Mogok Valley has produced the purest, most fluorescent reds in existence — the very source of the term "pigeon blood", awarded by the great laboratories (GRS, Bellerophon). Historic production is now extremely limited: each stone is as much a collector's piece as a jewel. Our Burmese rubies are sourced directly in Bangkok, the world's foremost ruby trading hub, and are systematically certified. For a modern alternative of great consistency, explore the Mozambique ruby. And to set your stone, discover our ruby engagement rings.

Merci beaucoup 😋

FAQ — Burmese Ruby

Burmese ruby (from present-day Myanmar) is considered the world benchmark for ruby. The deposits of the Mogok Valley yield stones of a particularly pure, intense red, whose natural fluorescence heightens their brilliance. It is the historic birthplace of the finest rubies ever found.

"Pigeon blood" describes the most coveted ruby colour: a vivid, deep red with a slight blue undertone and exceptional saturation. It is this colour, combined with outstanding brightness, that defines the most prestigious Burmese rubies.

Yes. With a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, ruby is one of the hardest stones after diamond. It is highly resistant to scratching and everyday wear, making it an ideal choice for a ring or any piece of jewellery worn regularly.

Many rubies are heat-treated to enhance their colour and clarity: this is a common, stable and widely accepted practice. Entirely natural (unheated) Burmese rubies are, however, exceptionally rare and highly sought after, and therefore command a higher price. In every case, we disclose any treatment applied, as a matter of transparency.

Both belong to the same mineral family and share the same hardness (9 on the Mohs scale). The only difference is colour: when the stone is red, it is called a ruby; all other shades — blue, pink, yellow, peach — are sapphires. Ruby and sapphire are simply two expressions of the same mineral species.

Historically, many celebrated "rubies" turned out to be red spinels — a distinct stone with a superb red colour but slightly lower hardness (8 on the Mohs scale). Ruby, being harder and more sought after, holds a higher value. Our certificates guarantee the precise identity of every stone.

Only a gemmological certificate issued by an independent laboratory can definitively confirm a ruby's Burmese origin and any treatment it may have undergone. Every Burmese ruby we offer is accompanied by such a document, so you can buy with complete confidence.

Burmese ruby ranks among the most precious gems in the world. Its price depends on the intensity of its colour (pigeon blood being the most prized), its clarity, its carat weight, and whether or not it has been heat-treated. Contact us to explore our selection and receive a personalised quote.
