Burmese ruby (from present-day Myanmar) is considered the world’s reference for ruby. The deposits of the Mogok Valley yield stones of a particularly pure and intense red, whose natural fluorescence deepens their brilliance. Mogok is the historic birthplace of the finest rubies ever found.
“Pigeon blood” describes the most sought-after ruby colour: a vivid, deep red with a slight blue undertone and exceptional saturation. It is this colour, combined with outstanding brilliance, that defines the most prestigious Burmese rubies and drives their value.
Yes. With a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, ruby is one of the hardest stones in existence, second only to diamond. It is highly resistant to scratching and stands up perfectly to daily wear, making it an excellent choice for a ring or any piece of jewellery worn regularly.
Many rubies are heat-treated to enhance their colour and clarity — a common, stable and widely accepted practice. Entirely natural (unheated) Burmese rubies are, however, exceptionally rare and highly prized, and therefore command a higher price. In every case, we disclose any treatment a stone has undergone, as a matter of full transparency.
Both belong to the same mineral family and share identical hardness (9 on the Mohs scale). The only difference is colour: when the stone is red, it is called a ruby; all other colours — blue, pink, yellow, peach and more — are sapphires. Ruby and sapphire are, in essence, two expressions of the same mineral species.
Historically, many celebrated “rubies” turned out to be red spinels — a distinct stone with a superb red colour but slightly lower hardness (8 on the Mohs scale). Ruby, being harder and more sought-after, commands a higher value. Our certificates guarantee the precise nature of every stone we offer.
Only a gemmological certificate issued by an independent laboratory can confirm with certainty the Burmese origin of a ruby and disclose any treatment it may have undergone. Every Burmese ruby we offer is accompanied by such a document, so you can purchase with complete confidence.
