Mahenge spinel takes its name from a locality in central Tanzania, near which a deposit discovered in 2007 yielded spinels of a brilliant, almost neon pink. The term refers both to an origin and to an intensity of colour that has become a benchmark among coloured-gemstone enthusiasts.
Its hue comes from fine traces of chrome within the crystal. These produce a vivid, luminous pink — sometimes tinged with raspberry red or a hint of orange — that appears lit from within, the hallmark of Mahenge stones.
Spinel is among the rare gemstones that are virtually never treated: no heating, no oiling. The colour of a Mahenge spinel is therefore entirely natural, exactly as the earth formed it.
In saturation and luminosity. A pink spinel can come from various origins and display soft or powdery tones; Mahenge is distinguished by its intense, warm and vibrant pink, which remains luminous even in low light.
Yes. With a hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale, spinel withstands everyday wear very well. Its natural, untreated colour makes it both a secure and distinctive choice for an engagement ring.
Gentle cleaning with warm soapy water and a soft brush is all that is needed. Avoid harsh chemicals and store the piece separately to preserve its polish.
