Yellow sapphire radiates from pale lemon to deep "canary" gold. Still relatively under the radar, it often allows — for an equivalent budget — larger stones than other colours in our selection, backed by the 9/10 hardness of corundum. Our yellow sapphires are sourced directly in Sri Lanka, certified by independent laboratories, and offered heated or unheated with full transparency. For an even bolder warm tone, its neighbour the orange sapphire turns up the intensity one notch further — and the full spectrum of sapphire remains yours to explore. Ready to wear one? Discover our yellow sapphire engagement rings, crafted in our atelier.

FAQ — Yellow Sapphire

Yellow sapphires come primarily from four origins. Sri Lanka remains the historic benchmark for vivid, luminous hues. Madagascar has established itself since the 1990s as the world's second largest source, offering excellent value for money. Australia (Queensland) produces yellow sapphires with a richer, more golden tone. Thailand rounds out the supply with stones in more orange-tinged shades. At Bonnot Paris, we source our yellow sapphires directly through our office in Sri Lanka.

The price depends on four criteria: colour, clarity, treatment and origin. Expect €500 to €1,200 per carat for a good-quality heated yellow sapphire (1 carat). For 2–3 carats of equivalent quality, expect €1,500 to €3,000 per carat. An unheated yellow sapphire commands a 30–50% premium. Exceptional pure "canary yellow" sapphires can exceed €5,000 per carat.

The yellow colour of sapphire comes from traces of iron within its crystal structure. The presence of titanium can shift the hue towards orange. The higher the concentration of iron, the more intense the yellow becomes. The most sought-after yellow sapphires display a pure yellow with no green or orange undertone. The term "canary yellow" refers to this exceptional shade. Heat treatment at high temperature can intensify the natural colour of a less saturated stone.

Heat treatment is an age-old practice for sapphires, used by gem cutters since antiquity. It intensifies colour and improves clarity. Around 95% of yellow sapphires on the market undergo this process. An unheated yellow sapphire (noted as "no heat" on the certificate) retains all of its natural characteristics. It commands a 30–50% premium for equivalent quality. Bonnot Paris offers both options. We do not sell any beryllium-treated sapphires. This controversial treatment alters the chemical structure of the stone.

Yes, without any reservation. Yellow sapphire offers a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, equal to blue sapphire and ruby. It withstands everyday wear perfectly and requires no protective setting. Its sunny colour evokes energy, joy and vitality — a radiant message for a marriage proposal. It is also an original alternative to a classic white diamond or blue sapphire.

Yellow sapphire pairs beautifully with all precious metals. Yellow gold echoes its hue and creates a warm, sunny effect — the most traditional choice. Rose gold produces a soft, romantic contrast. White gold and platinum allow the colour to read in its purest form, making them the modern choice best suited to the most saturated yellow sapphires. The decision comes down to the mood you are after: warmth with yellow gold, modernity with white gold.

Yellow sapphire carries a strong and positive symbolism across several cultures. In India, it represents prosperity, wisdom and good fortune. Hindu traditions associate it with the planet Jupiter and regard it as a lucky stone. In the Western world, it evokes the sun, energy and vitality. Its luminous colour makes it an ideal stone for births, milestone anniversaries and commitments. It offers a joyful alternative to the classic blue sapphire.
