Learn more — Sapphire
Sapphire is one of the most sought-after and widely used coloured gemstones in fine jewellery. A corundum with a hardness of 9/10 — second only to diamond — it endures through generations without losing its brilliance, and comes in far more than blue: teal, pink, padparadscha, yellow, green, violet, orange. Bonnot Paris sources its sapphires directly from origin markets in Sri Lanka and Madagascar. Every stone is presented with its treatment disclosure and an available laboratory report (SSEF, GRS, ICA or Bellerophon depending on the stone); diffusion-treated and fracture-filled stones do not meet our selection standards. Choose your gemstone from our curated collection, from Ceylon blue sapphire to Madagascan teal sapphire, then picture it set: discover our sapphire engagement rings, created bespoke in our workshop.

FAQ — Sapphires

Contrary to popular belief, sapphire is not only blue: it exists in virtually every colour of the spectrum, with the exception of red — which is called a ruby, even though it belongs to the same mineral species (corundum). At Bonnot Paris, we work with seven main colours:

  • Blue sapphire — the timeless classic, ranging from pale blue to deep royal blue. The most prized stones come from Kashmir (nearly exhausted), Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and Burma.
  • Yellow sapphire — from pale lemon yellow to a rich, golden, radiant yellow. Primary sources: Sri Lanka and Madagascar.
  • Pink sapphire — from pale pink to vivid pink. At the boundary between pink sapphire and ruby lies the padparadscha.
  • Padparadscha sapphire — the rarest and most precious of all, with its characteristic pinkish-orange hues reminiscent of the lotus blossom (from which it takes its Sinhalese name). Found almost exclusively in Ceylon.
  • Teal sapphire — between blue and green, a deep and contemporary shade highly sought after for modern engagement rings. Sourced primarily from Sri Lanka and Madagascar.
  • Violet sapphire — from lavender to deep violet, often mistaken for amethyst but far harder and more brilliant.
  • Green sapphire — from pale to intense green, rarer in gem quality.

There are also white sapphires (colourless), black sapphires, and fancy sapphires in intermediate hues (orange, golden-brown, blue-green). A remarkable optical phenomenon: certain sapphires display a colour change depending on the light source (blue in daylight, violet under incandescent light) — known as colour-change sapphires, and among the most valuable of all.

This chromatic diversity makes sapphire one of the most versatile gemstones in fine jewellery — each colour with its own rarity, its own symbolism and its own price per carat.

Sapphire is an excellent choice for an engagement ring thanks to its exceptional hardness, second only to diamond. A symbol of fidelity, sincerity and enduring love, it also captivates with its timeless elegance and magnificent range of blue hues. It is a precious stone that is at once refined, distinctive and perfectly suited to everyday wear.

Every creation begins with a personalised consultation — in Paris, in Angers, or by video call — to understand your wishes, your story and your budget.

Our experts guide you through the selection of stones and the development of your jewellery design.

Our designers then produce several sketches so you can visualise the piece.

Once the stones and design have been approved, our master jewellers craft your creation by hand in our workshops, to the highest standards of excellence of Maison Bonnot Paris.

How does the bespoke creation process work?

Yes, all our stones are certified by renowned laboratories such as Bellerophon, ICA GemLab, London Gem Lab, and others, guaranteeing their authenticity and exceptional quality.

Are your stones certified?

Delivery is carried out in person in Paris or via a specialist carrier, ensuring a secure, insured and fully reliable shipment to its destination.

How is my bespoke jewellery delivered?

Lead times depend on the complexity of the piece, but you should generally allow between 4 and 8 weeks after final design approval.

Thanks to our offices in India, Sri Lanka and Bangkok, at the heart of the markets and mines, we take the time needed to select the ideal stone, perfectly matched to your expectations.

How long does the creation process take?

Yes, Bonnot Paris offers a recycling and transformation service for your existing jewellery.
We can reuse the gold from your current pieces to give it a new life, in a jewel designed especially for you.

Can I use my own gold for my creation?

We work with many clients across France and internationally on the creation of bespoke jewellery.

A video consultation is first arranged to understand your wishes, expectations and project.

From there, a personalised follow-up is provided via WhatsApp or email, to guide you at every step.

We send you detailed photos and videos of the selected stones (or jewellery), so you can feel fully confident in your choice.

You are also welcome to share, by message or image, your inspirations, questions or doubts — we remain attentive throughout the entire creation process.
